What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are among the most common types of dental restorations. Advancements in dental technology improve the appearance and quality of these restorations, creating outcomes that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Crowns

Dental crowns act as artificial “caps” covering all of your visible tooth surfaces. Durable and beautiful, custom crowns restore teeth while preserving the connection between tooth and bone.

Bridges

Dental bridges work to “bridge” the gap when you have one or more missing teeth. Bridgework secures your adjacent natural teeth using dental crowns and remains in place until it eventually needs to be replaced with a new bridge.

During your consultation, Dr. McPherson explains the pros and cons of all available treatment options. If crowns or bridges are right for you, he’s happy to discuss these treatments in detail.

What kinds of issues can crowns and bridges correct?

Dental crowns are an incredibly versatile treatment option, providing a solution to many different needs. Some of the issues a crown can correct include:

  • Chipped, cracked, or fractured tooth
  • Worn-down tooth
  • Discoloration that cannot be corrected through teeth whitening
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Protecting a tooth weakened by multiple dental treatments

Dental crowns are also the final step in root canals and dental implants.

What is the process for getting crowns and bridges?

Both crowns and bridges rely on advanced digital imaging to determine the precise specifications of the tooth being treated and the adjacent teeth. For crowns, an injection of local anesthetic numbs the area before Dr. McPherson removes a portion of your tooth tissue to make room for the crown.

Impressions guide the fabrication process, and a temporary crown protects your tooth. Once the permanent crown arrives, Dr. McPherson removes the temporary crown, checks the new crown for appearance and fit, then cements it into place.

Bridgework works similarly, although there are two crowns on each side of the missing tooth or teeth. The artificial teeth used in bridges are sometimes held together with wire to create additional stability.
