SLEEP APNEA

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-disordered breathing condition that Dr. McPherson will screen for during your dental exam. If you’re experiencing symptoms of a sleeping disorder, snore, or struggle with a C-PAP machine, consider asking about an oral sleep appliance at Ballpark Heights Family Dental in Des Moines.

WHAT IS SLEEP APNEA?

Sleep apnea is a prevalent but often underdiagnosed medical disorder that affects millions of individuals across the United States. It is characterized by brief interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to a range of health issues.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep apnea and occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relax excessively or enlarged tissues block the airway. As a result, breathing stops numerous times during the night, leading to reduced oxygen levels.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to warning signs that include:

  • Headaches
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability, depression, or moodiness
  • Low libido
  • Weight gain or enlarged neck
  • Snoring
  • Feeling tired after waking
  • High blood pressure, cardiovascular disease

Oral symptoms may be visible during your exam, such as worn, flat teeth, marks on your tongue, or a restricted airway. If we suspect that you may have sleep apnea, Dr. McPherson may recommend a take-home sleep test to diagnose which type of sleeping disorder you have. We offer C-PAP alternative treatments in our office, such as oral sleep appliances, which are typically more comfortable for patients with sleep apnea.

TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR SLEEP APNEA

If you suspect you may have sleep apnea, getting treatment could save you from a life-altering cardiovascular attack. While most people turn to C-PAP therapy for their apnea treatment, one of the most effective alternative treatments for mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea is a custom-made oral appliance.

Oral sleep appliances resemble sports mouthguards or retainers; however, they are designed to reposition your jaw and tongue to keep your airway open while you sleep. Dr. Scott McPherson can create a personalized appliance tailored to your unique needs, providing a comfortable and convenient alternative to C-PAP machines.

If you are C-PAP intolerant, you may want to consider a dental sleep apnea alternative.

In some cases, a combination of treatments may be necessary to effectively manage sleep apnea. We work closely with your other healthcare professionals, including sleep medicine specialists and pulmonologists, to ensure you receive the most comprehensive care possible. This collaborative approach allows us to address both dental and medical aspects of your condition.

In addition to oral appliance therapy, we'll provide guidance on lifestyle changes that can help improve your sleep apnea symptoms. These may include weight management, avoiding alcohol and sedatives before bedtime, and adopting a healthy sleep hygiene plan.
